Two Macy’s stores will close at the Westfield Promenade mall in the spring as part a larger series of closures announced this week by the Cincinnati-based department store chain.
The Woodland Hills shopping center at 6100 Topanga Canyon Blvd. will lose its main Macy’s store and a Macy’s furniture gallery, which together represent about 270,000 square feet. The closures will put 131 people out of work.
A third Macy’s store at nearby Westfield Topanga mall will remain open.
Macy’s Inc. on Thursday announced plans to close 14 stores across the country and invest more in online sales. The restructuring will involve integrating online and in-store purchasing and merchandising. It also includes trimming jobs at every Macy’s store as well as Bloomingdale’s, another chain owned by the company.
“Going forward, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s will be better able to move more quickly and nimbly to select merchandise, assort inventories and serve total customer demand, no matter how, when or where the customer shops,” said Macy’s Chief Executive Terry Lundgren in a statement.
In a separate statement, Westfield Promenade owner, Westfield Group, an Australian shopping center landlord with U.S. headquarters in Culver City, said that the closures will allow the Woodland Hills mall to update its store mix.
“Westfield has a strong track record of recovering and reorienting former department store real estate and we view this departure as an opportunity to do so at the Promenade,” the statement concluded.
The closure comes as construction continues on Westfield Group’s $350 million, 550,000-square-foot Village at Topanga project, which will connect its two Topanga Canyon malls with nearly 100 shops and restaurants.
